Project Details
Tor View School in Haslingden was extending the school by incorporating a new multi-use space providing sports facilities and a performance hall, as well as an extension to the existing plant room for the services of the new building. The school’s vision was to have a large open multi-use space to accommodate three badminton courts, space for group physical activities and performances, and the inclusion of trampolines.
Ground Conditions
In general granular made ground extends to between 0.55m and 1.0m followed by soft becoming stiff natural clays. A small amount of upfilling was required to achieve the required levels.
Solution
It was not feasible to construct the foundations within the made ground or soft superficial soils as excessive total and or differential settlement could occur. It was decided that the installation of Vibro Stone Columns (VSCs) would improve the bearing capacity of the existing soils while reducing the magnitude of settlement. In total 114 VSCs were installed to 3.0m beneath the foundations & floor slab of the new structure, 1 No. plate load test was carried out to check the workmanship of the Stone Columns.
