Project Details
Menard was appointed to provide a ground improvement solution for the single storey warehouse development at Central Park Drive, Rugby. The development footprint was located over areas of made ground and variable natural soils. Direct construction of the structure without any treatment could have resulted in excessive post-construction total and differential settlement. To provide a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to excavation and replacement, Menard proposed the use of Rolling Dynamic Compaction (RDC) beneath the warehouse slab, improving the engineering properties of the upper soil profile and reducing settlement risk.
Ground Conditions
The typical ground conditions comprised granular Made Ground with localised cohesive pockets, overlying Oadby Till of firm to stiff gravelly clay, underlain by medium dense to dense sand and gravel deposits.
Solution
Menard designed a RDC solution to densify and improve the upper 1.5-2.0m of ground beneath the proposed warehouse slab, to support a UDL of 55 kPa. The RDC works were undertaken using a 17.7-tonne Impactor 3000H four-sided non-circular roller, delivering high-energy impacts across the treatment area through multiple controlled passes.
The treatment provided: increased soil density and stiffness, enhanced bearing capacity, reduced total and differential settlements, and identification of localised soft spots for further remediation (if required).
The RDC process was continuously monitored and verified through post-treatment testing through cone penetration test and dummy footing test; to confirm the required ground performance criteria.
Sustainable development
The use of RDC resulted in:
– a reduced need for excavation and replacement of unsuitable material
– lower carbon emission impact compared with other traditional ground improvement or earthworks solutions
