Project Details
Caddick Construction approached Menard for a cost effective Ground Improvement solution on this high profile project. It was proposed to construct 2 No. apartment blocks with retail on the ground floor and 5 No. rows of townhouses. The project was designed on installing Vibro Stone Columns as an alternative to conventional piles down to bedrock. The project was carried out within the our proposed sub contract period and the client was happy with the work together with the cost savings.
Ground Conditions
The site investigation showed Made Ground over medium-dense sands onto boulder clay. These ground conditions were suitable for Ground Improvement with Vibro Stone Columns (VSCs); this solution came in on time and within budget.
Solution
The VSCs were installed to depths between 1.5m – 3.0m as per our design achieving bearing capacities of 125kPa beneath the strip footings of the townhouses & 25kPa beneath the floor slabs or the apartment blocks. Residual settlements have been limited to 25 mm total settlement with relative differential settlement of less than 1/500. The Metrolink was in close proximity to our work so vibration monitoring was carried out to ensure that our works had no impact on the Metrolink service.
