Project Details

The scheme comprised a sports pavilion with an indoor 4g sports pitch, consisting of a two storey building with the ground floor area covering approximately 1,300m2.

Ground Conditions

The ground conditions comprised of up to 3.5m of made ground, comprising mixed loose to medium dense sand with some stiff clay. This was underlain by natural medium dense sand. Groundwater was present approximately 3.5m below ground level.

Solution

Vibro Stone Columns provided an excellent solution to support the foundations of this new two-storey building which contains an indoor 4G pitch. The floors in the non-pitch area were also improved. Pad and strip foundations were designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 150kPa and the floor area treated to achieve loading of 50kPa. The 4G pitch itself only had a 5kPa design load (and was not treated with Vibro Stone Columns). As the area had been used as a car park for many years, the near-surface fill was very well compacted. Despite this our powerful vibro poker was able to penetrate through the fill to the required design depth (up to 5.5m in places), without the need for pre-boring.
