Project Details

Installation of Controlled Modulus Columns (CMCs) to two adjacent extension areas of a car showroom.

Ground Conditions

Broadleys Business Park in Stirling has notoriously difficult ground conditions, due to the presence of very soft clays to 11m depth. Below this depth there is a band of Medium Dense Sands which provides a good founding strata into which CMCs can be embedded.

Solution

Controlled Modulus Columns were used to support foundations and floor slab of the extension to the existing Honda Western Showroom at Broadleys Business Park, Stirling. This existing building is also supported on CMCs, installed previously by Menard. Working within a live site with numerous services running across the site, Menard carefully planned operations to ensure that the works took place without damage to the critical underground infrastructure . CMCs were an ideal solution at this site as the auger-displacement methodology means that there is low noise and low vibration, which reduces any impact to a ‘live’ site. This resulted in minimal disruption to the adjacent car showroom, so that it could remain fully open for business
