Project Details

Moyola Precision Engineering manufacture the aluminium rib components for the wings of all A320 aircraft in Europe. As part of their expansion, a new 1,100m2 workshop required support from Menard.

Ground Conditions

Shallow deposits of locally very soft and organic cohesive soil overlying stiff glacial Till.

Solution

Early discussions with the consulting engineer confirmed that either piling or a stiff ground improvement system would be required. CMCs (Controlled Modulus Columns also known as Rigid Inclusions) were chosen as the optimum solution to provide support for the new workshop foundations (designed to 125kPa) and workshop ground floor slab (designed for a heavy load of 60kN/m2). In total 325No. CMCs up to 5m depth were installed over a 5 day period, providing typical settlement performance of up to 25mm total and 1:500 differential.

Sustainable Development

Originally a Piling project, an alternative ground improvement solution (Controlled Modulus Columns -CMCs) was proposed bringing cost, programme and CO2 benefits
